Jeez, because one might have to answer a knock at the door and a man should never be seen in public with his head uncovered. Be Prepared, it's a thing. My camping bonnet, hand knit in Ireland and brought to me from the home country ( Mom's side) by my dear sister. It resides in the truck so when out camping or fishing my head is always properly covered Is that a pic of Billy Gibbons? Might be my cousin Euell. see the pinetree? Hint They are edible you know.

When they were popular, nobody had decent heating that lasted all night.

How does one keep still enough while asleep to keep from knocking the dangly ball hat off his chrome dome and subsequently getting grease all over the pillow?

It would have kept your head warm when the fire went out. .......Heard all those stories growing up. Like when my maternal grandfather was working the overnight shift as a fire fighter, and on cold winter nights my grandmother was the one who had to go down and shovel some more coal into the furnace after waking up cold. They had gas heat by the time I started playing in their basement but the old coal bin was still down there and still had coal in it. A lot of your body heat is lost through the skull in the cold and a sleeping cap helps negate some of that.

They started in old England where nobody had decent heat. They also invented bed curtains - those drapes all around the bed to help keep the heat in. England is a cold, damp, miserable place to live.

I started wearing my watch cap while sleeping in a bombed-out building in Afghanistan in the winter of 2010-2011. I liked it so much that I just kept doing it. Even after growing out my hair post-retirement, I still wear it every night.

But what is the puffy ball for? Same thing as that patch of fluff on the back of a ski glove. Nose drizzle.

The ball is a device designed for snorers....to be stuffed firmly into the mouth by a frustrated partner when the racket becomes too much to bear.

Yes indeed. Those castles and huge manor houses with high ceilings, built of stone with no insulation were cold, dreary places, no matter the huge fireplaces they had to keep stoked in Fall, Winter, and Spring. Same in Europe, etc. I do like good insulation and central heating furnaces. L.W.

People still die every winter over there due to not being able to afford much heat in the winter. Living in a 300-year old home has it's downside.
