I’ve purchased 6 Garands over the years. All were Service grades, with one exception and they all exceeded my expectations. You may or may not get a GI stock, but the latest stocks have been Boyd’s and look very nice. My exception Garand was their Expert model, which has a new Criterion barrel and commercial stock. It can be gotten in either 308 Win or 30-06. Mine is the 308. My Service grade is an International Harvestor in 30-06.
I recommend a Service grade or better for collector purposes and the Expert grade for a shooter. I had 6 at one time. I traded 3 for AR's. Man, was I dumb. kwg

I watched a long time and never saw a field or service grade available. I threw the dice on a rack grade, other than the stock it was decent. I did a bit of stock restoration and it’s a decent rifle. Mine is a June 45 production mostly original other than the stock and bolt.

Get a Garand Gear gas plug and you can shoot commercial ammunition in your Garand. https://www.garandgear.com/product/ported-gas-plug/Bruce

I agree with AH64guy- visit one of the stores and pick one out. I bought one at Anniston last year after handling probably 75-100 rifles.

At the stores, unlike a commercial gun store, they’ll actually help you find a nice one for the money and for the grade you want. It’s no skin off their nose if you find one that’s been under graded. Be warned, if you do go to one of the stores, you’ll find it hard to walk away without a rifle. Make sure you have a credit card. 😁
