Then out of nowhere that pesky assed Chester storms it. Thinking I'd bitch slap him at times, he tells Matt about the current dilemma. Matt jumps up, straps on iron & heads out. That fugging Chester I thought.


Then it hit me why Matt never backhanded Chester. Matt just skipped out on another tab. Seen him do it many times. Thumbs up Matt.

Wasn't "Matt" (James Arness) something like 6 foot four? Maybe the rest of him was proportioned appropriately, and Kitty was planning on picking up the tab anyway!

The show's producers had a hard time finding a horse for him to ride that had legs long enough it didn't look like a Shetland pony with Matt in the saddle.

I always wanted to see Sister Bertrill swoop down Main St. in Dodge City right as Matt Dillon cleared leather in a gunfight and see her scatter horses and small children in terror:

Decades ago, when my wife was young and living in California, she bought one of the horses Matt rode in Gunsmoke. The mare was 17 hands high! Had some draft horse in her so her pasterns were always trimmed to hide the longer hair. If you watch enough shows you may see her. She had one white rear stocking foot.

The horse was in a cast from a trip wire accident when a stunt guy told my wife about the horse. She bought the mare she named Chap. The stunt rider and she figured if nothing else she would be a good brood mare. The horse recovered and it was discovered she was a wonderful riding horse. My wife often rode her bareback.

Chap and my wife moved to the Hopi Reservation. The horse was ridden often. One time Chap was ridden into Canyon de Chelly bareback on a remote trail from Hopi lands where the Navajos encountered her and another rider saying they came in illegally and they were going to take their horses. The two women blasted back up the trail they came in on leaving the Navajos in the dust.

One time Chap bred across an electric fence! The colt was named Hotwire.

Chap was also bred to one of the best stallions, the leader of the Hopis, Vernon owned. The resulting stallion was a gruella of stunning size and proportions. That stallion became an important stud for the nation.

Another time using a saddle this huge horse was ridden with a group into the Grand Canyon at Havasupai. When the group was in the bottom a helicopter flew in, all the horses dumped their riders except Chap. Chap was looking around for the camera.

Chap lived to be 38 finishing her life in Tucson. My wife took two days off from teaching to grieve.
