I am planing a loft bed for one of my children and am wondering what a safe height for the rail around the bed is? Want it too be tall enough to keep child from rolling off the bed but dont want it to be too tall to climb over.
Anyone got any experience with this?

Most building codes require no more than a 4 inch gap at openings that a child could get their head through. Keeping that in mind if you put the bottom of a 2x6 rail at 4 inches above the top of the mattress you would be 9 1/2 inches above the mattress. At least thats what I did.

Standard nominal 2x4, then a gap the same width as a standard 2x4, and another 2x4. Doesn't need to be higher than a foot or so. Start the bottom horizontal level with the top of the mattress.
Leave a gap in the rail about 2 feet wide at one end of the bed, that way the kiddos can climb up and down without the added risk of goin over the rail. Build the ladder right up into the the gap with one side extended to anchor the floating end of the rail for rigidity.

Oh no, there was a group here locally that was putting 12 foster kids in special beds (cages). They had'em painted up real nice and used chicken wire on'em. There staying at the local "Greybar" hotel now.

I have seen a couple of thoes, they are cool but I am thinking a little more basic set of stairs. I am afraid that if I get too creative it will never get done.

One of the most popular ladders is just 1 bys at the end, part of the construction from floor to top.
