It depends upon whether or not they removed the spacer from the back of the magazine box when they rebarreled it. If the spacer is still there then I believe the max it'll take is 2.960". If they removed the spacer then they'll take a 3.100" round.

Inside box length of the factory mag box on a M70 in .257R is 2.75"..

That's what mine measures and it's all original..

So that WILL leave some room to stretch it past SAAMI specs a little if the spacer is removed ? ...at least enough to make a noticable difference ?

It's a rather large spacer.. Removing that will give you a host of other issues you'll have to address - issues that I'd be loathe to attempt w/o a serious conversation with the owner first..

When you say 'came across'.... I assume you saw one for sale some place.. I have a feeling it's for sale all right, for a very good reason..

I still cannot understand why people want to jam a H&H cased round into a .223 length action.. (just stating extremes to get a point across).. smile

Redneck,I havent forgot about our talk. Its about a more compact and lighter rig. Turns out the factory stock on mine is 1.82 pounds..which is 28-29oz? Thats what Most of the better after market stocks are weighing according to their site info...save for MPI and maybe LoneWolf @16oz and lower, the previous I have been advised against ALOT. Not to mention I've been given quotes from said Companies in the $600-$900 amount. Finished and installed by stock manufacturer. The Mcmillan Edge is still over $500 and around 21-24oz according to them..which shaves only half a pound or slightly more at best. Too much for me. I'm thinking at these prices I'll just hold out for a good used gun in the caliber. And give up on the idea of something "customized" for me since stocks alone are as much as a factory gun with some good glass on it. Maybe more manufacturers will start making .257s again and I can go that route. Just wanted something built for "Me".
