George J. was a rooster, and the fact he was short added to that, I loved that he was self made and self confident...might be a lesson in that. I think Mother Jefferson one of the great under appreciated characters in tv. That these shows would not make it today because of hyerpsensitivity of certain segements of society is true, and is sad.
What is missed is that these shows did not poke fun at blacks but at whites who either appeared ignorant, like Archie in his bias, or by the absolute stiffness and honkeyness displayed by George's neighbor the English Mr. Willis , or by the white cop "Swaney" that used to visit Fred and Lamont with his more hip black partner "Smitty".
Today one can't even use the word 'black' in a sentence without it producing a trumped up offense. That list of what offends grows daily with the lust for identifying one's self as some sort of victim in order to expand the extortion it has proven to yield.
I was going to say the bias towards whites never offended because whites are secure in who they are - except that it is no longer so. The fact is that this whole attitude culminated in so many voting for Obama so that they could feel.....progressive..in their thinking and wash away the stain of not being black. I find it racist to vote for candidate because of color- even if, and perhaps more so as it condescends, if that candidate is of a different color than you.
Maybe I do Sherman H a disservice by the rant, not my intent. RIP Mr. J.
