Ok, I know this is a broad question, with many correct answers...But, I was wondering what scopes folks prefer on their 99, or 1899 ?

I am liking the Stith setup on the early ones, and the later 99's I think I am leaning towards the straight tubed scopes as well.

Anyone care to tell, or show pics of their setups?

Thanks,
dave

I only hunt with 308s so I roll with Burris 3x9 Fulfields. My dad preferred the straight tube 3x Leupold, looks classier but I shoot a lot further than he ever did

I tend to like the older 3x and 4x28 Leupolds myself on 99's. Have taken animals to 300 with the 3x and 400 with the 4x.

Mine (a 358) was wearing a Weaver K4-W until the scope went TU right before deer season last year. The hurry up replacement was a Bushnell ScopeChief 4X that I had on hand. I might do some scope swapping later this year, if I do, the 99 will get a Leupold M8 6X.

At camp, there was another ScopeChief 4X and a Redfield 4X that I can think of, not sure what the others were.

FWIW, I don't like the look of the straight tube scopes, it needs a front bell to look right in my eyes.

I like the straight tube 3x Leupolds. They are light and they look sleek on smaller guns like the Featherweights. Here's one on my .358 F with a German 3 post reticle:

For the older untapped guns, my favorite setup is the Lyman Alaskan in a 7/8" Stith:

Steel tube Weaver 2X7 variable or anything in a Stith for non-drilled rifles.

For undrilled rifles I like Stiths. Problem is I'm down to a supply of a couple or so 3/4 inch Stiths and a few Weaver J2.5s . For drilled rifles I like straight tube Weavers and Leupolds.

If it's not drilled, I like Stiths. Up until recently I had one Lyman Alaskan in a Stith. Now fortunately, I have two. I have the capability of mounting on both the 1899 AND the 99 using the Lyman. I try to stay away from Leupold on the undrilled models and stick with vintage Weaver or Lyman. Once I get into the Chicopee/d&t'd rifles I like nothing better than the older Leupolds. For the most part I prefer straight tubes. Even there, I am strange. Once in awhile you'll see a vari-xII 2-7X. crazy crazy crazy

The main thing that drew me to Savage lever guns is the way they feel- slim, lightweight (in the main), and beautifully balanced, making them a joy to carry on long days in the woods. To me, putting a scope on such a creature wrecks all of that- even a small straight tubed scope. If I'm putting myself in a situation where longer ranges are probable, portability isn't an issue, and feel the need for a scope, then I grab a scoped bolt gun and go.

I like the Stith on the undrilled ones also with a vintage steel tube scope. I recently machined up a scope mount simular to a Stith but accepting weaver style rings. I copied the Stith rear base except hollowed out underneath so that chunck of tool steel wouldn't weigh so much.

Dave,
Right now I have an 99F (1955) model with a Leupold 2x7 and a 99E Featherweight in 250-3000 with a Lyman All American with P/C in a 4X.
