There are programs out there you can use to "scale" the photo to get them web ready. To get a photo to a good size for computer screens, e-mail, to post in this forum, etc., you could do two things (I will explain below). However, there are numerous ways for you to accomplish the same, and I will let others explain it to you.

I do it this way (steps 1 & 2):

1. "Scale" the photo so one direction, either horizontally or vertically, is not larger than 800 pixels.

2. Use PhotoShop Elements as follows:

a. I click on "Save for web." That opens the Save For Web screen.

b. Look for a small arrow on the right side of the screen, across from the word "Preset." I click on that arrow, and select the following: "Optimize To File Size." Now I enter "100" in the "Desired File Size" block, and then click on "OK" to save.

c. When you click on "OK," that will bring you back to the Save For Web screen. At this point, click on "OK" at the top right of the screen. This last action is to save a picture that has been optimized for web display, e-mails, etc. Save it to a location or folder you will remember, and when you write an e-mail, just get a copy of it from the folder you have saved it before.
----------
Or you can do this:

If you don't want to go through all the trouble sizing a photo and saving it in the hard drive, you could always open an account at "photobucket.com," and upload the photo to your account at PhotoBucket. The software a photobucket.com will automatically size the photo to a manageable size. Once the photo is at your account space at PhotoBucket, just copy the photo URL, exit your account, logon at this forum, and post the URL here.

You will see the instructions on how to post photos right at this forum.

We're playing with pixel counts here. Your monitor is going to take any photo, regardless of resolution, and spread it out to show from 72 to 96 pixels/inch. So, if you post a 3" wide photo that has a resolution of 600 dpi, it's going to get spread out to about 20" wide. For emails, you probably don't want them over maybe 8" wide at the most, and usually smaller, so you don't want over 700 pixels wide. Photoshop and most other editing programs allow you to specify the total number of pixels in both directions. These forums, for example, will allow a photo of about 700 pixels wide before you have to scroll back and forth to see it all (this varies according to your monitor's resolution setting).
I said MOST other editing programs. The program that came with my Olympus doesn't allow me to select number of pixels (among other deficiencies) so I never use it.

There are always exceptions. The above refers to every email program I've used and to these forums. If you open a high resolution photo in My Documents, it will show actual size but at a lower resolution. Your resolution isn't lost but it doesn't show up on the monitor.

As for where to start, when I got my new digital, I started with taking shots in "fully auto" mode. Then as I wanted to change things, I would look up that particular thing in the manual, and do it several times so I learned how.

Each time I wanted to learn how to do something new with the camera, I would look it up. These digitals do soooooo much, I haven't had my camera a year yet, and I carry the manual around with me every time I have the camera.

As for loading the pictures, my computer has MS photo editor, and it is very easy to resize the photo with that program. If you have that program on your computer, I would be happy to help you with it, just say the word. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />

Sorry. I use a Mac, but used the instructions provided to me at a PC forum for Photoshop Elements and the PC.

No Offense intended Ray. I know nothing about Mac's but sometimes a direct and to the point answer is better understood to some people. We all have different ways of learning and trying to explain it to others via replies and pm's is sometimes very difficult. Have any new pics to post? The weather improved any? Or are you knee deep in snow still?

I'm one of those guys who always wants to know why, not just how. I figure that if I know why, the how makes more sense and it sticks with me longer. It doesn't make for short answers, though.
