Curious, why do you prefer the I over the II? I have both and find the primer modules a PIA, although I feel safer with the locking lugs on the bolt head.

I have a II, Rem conversion and Savage conversion. I had a I and sold it but wish I still had it. Just a want, not a need

I have one and like it. You do not need to clean it very much when using smoke less powder. I have 7 muzzle loading and like the Savage the best of all. A lot less cleaning!!

The original Savage 10ML used a standard Model 10 single shot action with a .223 size bolt head without the ejector plunger installed. The breech plug was "chambered" for a steel "module" shaped like a short fat cartrige case with no neck that held a 209 primer. Since it used a standard action it could be rebarreled to use a cartridge and the ATF ruled it was a modern firearm requiring an FFL to ship and a form 4473 to sell.
The 10ML-II did away with the modules and locking lug bolt head so it wasn't adaptable to cartridges. The ATF then ruled it was a muzzleloader not a firearm and did not require a 4473.

Was not aware of that... Makes perfect sense why I see ads looking for the originals now.

Very interesting. So if I could find a barrel, I could convert any old Savage 10 over to ML. Anyone know of anywhere to source a barrel?

http://www.smokelessmz.com/ Luke is great to deal with and will help you set one up. I just finished mine going to the range next weekend weather permitting. It has a Pac-Nor .45 cal barrel on it. You will need a bolt head and breech plug and a few other odds and ends but all in all a fairly easy conversion.

Yes........kind of. IF you can find a Savage 10ML barrel, breech plug and ignition modules you could turn a large shank model 10 action with a .223 bolt head into a ML. However the breech plugs for the original 10ML's were fitted (headspaced) at the factory and ignition modules are getting scarce. The folks at the link EdKin refers to sell a bolt head for the Savage 10 action that is kind of a hybred of a ML and a MLII. It has the locking lugs of the ML but holds the primer in the bolt head rather than use the modules of the original design. Screw in a barrel fitted with a MLII breech plug and you're good to go. Last I heard though they were having problems with the primer sticking in the bolt head. Maybe they have it sorted out by now.

There's an ML I on Gunbroker now. Sounds like he thinks alot of it. Looks like it only comes with 2 modules. Don't know if they're available any more, I saw some go on ebay for $15 each last year.

Well, the last one I saw on Gunbroker brought quite a bit, over $600. It is overpriced for an altered gun however. The barrel's been shortened by about 4 inches. Hey, maybe it's one of those super duper rare 10ML carbines!!

I wrote the seller, the barrel measures 19" but she's sure it's original. Yep, super rare alright!

Wow! It got bids up to $704 but the reseerve wasn't met. It's relisted now with no reserve for $750. It kinda ticks me off the seller isn't disclosing it's been altered when I informed her of it.
It also has me thinking of listing mine if people are willing to spend that much for one. A few years ago you couldn't get very much for an ML-I.

I also sent her a message about the 19" barrel. She said it was stock??? Never heard of a stock 19" barrel on a Savage ML. She did say several people questioned it but still hasn't disclosed it???
