Crappie fishing has been slow this year at the 30 acre pond I use. Yesterday and today I've caught two nice crappie about 12 inches long. Each had a raised, bright red, jelly like soft mass on both sides of their dorsal fin. Mass is about an inch wide and three inches long. I've never seen this before.

Goggling fish diseases often mentions columnairs but pictures provided don't exactly match what I'm seeing. There doesn't appear to be a loss of scales, no foamy whiteness around the edges of the mass.

Fileting the fish, there doesn't appear that what ever this is has penetrated the skin.

Anyone else seen anything like this or have an idea what it is?
