It is more than sound. Tha jarring will eat cheap scopes quickly.

I've read/heard that 10/22s were hard on scopes and could shake a poorly constructed scope loose, but I hadn't heard that swapping from the factory installed steel bolt stop buffer to an after-market synthetic unit would reduce or eliminate that issue.

Just goes to show that as long as you keep your eyes and ears open, you'll keep learning new things.

Take a peek at this sale on riflescopes all under $500.00. There's a few great options here.

Thanks guys I did settle on the 2-7x32 Vantage keeping it under $100. My original thought was the Weaver K but wanted to try something new and had not checked out a Hawke before.

I recently started migrating away from fixed powers after years and years of strictly 6x on hunting rifles. The newer scopes are just brighter than they used to be, have good features, AND I found myself liking 2-4x much of the time. Field of view etc...

I am interested in any other 1022 tidbits so I hope this thread doesn't die- you guys have been great. Would love some feedback on red dots and halosites etc....

Oh, before I forget where is the best place to get the buffer?

I have an old Redfield accutrac on mine. I sighted it in at 25 yards, moved target to 50 yards, counted the clicks to get on at 50, did the same every 25 yards out to two hundred yards. If I can get the distance correct, I can hit if I make a steady shot out to two hundred.

I think that I've bought all of my synthetic buffers on eBay.

I had a 3-9x40 Simmons on mine but it got bent. Anyway, I've got an old 1979 model Steel Tube Weaver k-6 I'm putting on it.

Confession time - I got my scope and proceeded to do what I discovered millions of others have done - stripped out the front scope mount screw hole by over tightening the steel screws provided with the Talleys.
I disassembled, cleaned and degreased and and merely applied some metal epoxy in there to hold the screw in place- I know I know- but the three others screws are holding fast already.

Hammer - got your 56mm suggestion too late - darn it - wink

I smeared a little silicon in the rings, remounted the Hawke. Next day I proceeded to crank the stiff power ring to and fro a few times and it seemed to free it up a bit.

260guy - I bought a buffer from Midway. Judging by descriptions of others I looked at this one is a bit more substantial and seems a quality part. Don't know why or how some people had issues installing. Was less than trivial.

I thought the 32 mm scope would look a tad more ...svelte.. but got to say over all after the refinish ...the rig looks pretty sweet right now.

Now, if only my non-Nightforce can miraculously track minute of squirrel under the punishment of even 22lr. Some of you know what I mean! :-)

Have you considered a red dot instead of a scope? I put an inexpensive TruGlo red/green dot on my 10/22 and I really like it.

Brownells has a fix for stripped 10/22 scope base holes.
Its a slightly larger than 6-48 screw. Still 48 threads per inch, just larger OD..........and the head will fit in a scope base designed for 6-48.
The tap and a dozen screws is about 40 bucks.

FWIW we have three 10/22's at my house.

Target model (build) wears Leupold Freedom EFR 3-9X (has AO).
Hunter wears a Leupold VX1 2-7X (needs parallax adjusted). Can run up to 4X at 25 yards and close to 6x at 50 yards, but not 7X and stay focused.
The plinkster wears a Bushnell TRS25 reddot.

All have 6-48 screws (but if I do booger one I have the fix ready). LOL
Kit was bought to fix a different rig a while back.
