Contemplating a new scope for my 308
Not a competition shooter ! Not a long range Shooter ! Just used at the local range .
Looking at budget scopes and read alot of posts here by those impressed with Burris Fullfield 3-9 x40 .
Where are all the Vortex Crossfire II fans ? Wondering what the preferences are.
Part 2 - Trouble seeing bullet holes on 50 yard targets with 308 & .22. Will splatter target and my old
7x50 Herters monocular be enough at 100 yds or should I invest in a more powerful / modern monocular ?

Grab one while they’re cheap: https://a.co/d/7Z9QNw8

Lower-end Vortex is usually pretty chintzy.

For optics I’d recommend one of them modern double-barreled monoculars.

Thanks guys ,
No responses after nearly 24 hours . I was about to lose hope ( Wah ! )
Will now have to see which one my wife recommends .
My also old Redfield Widefield 4x just doesn't seem very bright compared the my .22 scope ( BSA sweet 22 )
Really like that cheap little BSA scope.
Also have double barrel monocular but hoping the splatter targets will help.
If not, have my eye on a Konus Small 3 Monocular ( 8-24 x 40 mm )

I'd take a Burris FF-II over anything else priced under $400 including Leupold, and you can often find them under $150. That is only the FF-II. The newer FF-IV doesn't impress me all that much.

They are still $104 on Amazon.

I agree. I've had good luck with FF II's.

I have a Vortex crossfire crossbow scope that works as it should. The optics are surprisingly good. I'd say right there in the same neighborhood with my Leupold VX-1's, Nikon Pro-Staff's and Bushnell Elite 3200's. I also have a 2-7x32 Crossfire rimfire scope on a .22. Judging by the dime sized 50 yard groups I get with it and the fact that it holds zero after bouncing around in the rack on my quad, I'd say it works as it's supposed to as well. They both have those blasted fast focus eye pieces that I don't care for but at least they don't have the retarded ocular bell power change of the Burris.

I haven't been impressed with low end Vortex, FF-II's and E1's are gtg (if you like the reticles).

I have both, The Burris FF-II wins. I would not buy another Vortex crossfire.

Last year I bought a 4.5-14 for a loaner rifle. It will not hold zero and the finish rubbed off on a very soft pack. Burris did send me a prepaid shipping label
Better than Leupold did on a VX6 that puked the first hunt and now needs to go back because a ham handed tech over tightened a turret and gouged it and left a paralex dial sloppy. Going back on my dime. Guess what brands of scopes I wont be buying anymore.
Oh and many years ago I had a Burris FF go back 3. Wouldnt replace it just told me it was fixed and it wasn’t. Not tried it since.
My Swaro El 10x42 are going back also. Double image, very little travel to adjust for my eyes and the rubber adjustment knob is separating. In contrast my old Zeiss 10x40’s (2 pair) keep going just fine

Vortex can have clear glass and perform well for the price but there is a reason Cameraland doesn't sell them anymore. I seem to remember Doug telling me he had several people working full time to process all of the Vortex returns his customers brought him, and finally they dropped the whole line.

If you don't want to take the chance you'll get a lemon, stick with Burris - a LOT of experienced Campfire members have.

Crossfire are Chinese. The Fullfield IV are Chinese.

Fullfield II and Droptine are Philippine. If that matters to you

Bought a few FFII's for myself and helped others buy many. Latest purchase for S-I-L was the Droptine and I may like it even better- and it doesn't have the funky eye piece that bothers some on the FF2. Last scope I bought for myself is a vx-Freedom which I picked over a Burris because I love the #4 reticle- but at twice the cost I don't consider it an initially better scope. Did some low light viewing but yet to compare directly in hunting situations. The Burris Ballistic Plex reticle is a good one.

I own a Vortex Crossfire 2-7x32 Rimfire that used to be on my CZ 457 .22LR and our camp rifle is a 7mm-08 with a Fullfield 3-9x40. Not completely apples to apples, but it’s a data point. To me, the Vortex is a fine scope for what I paid for it, but for your .308 I’d go with the Fullfield over the Crossfire every time.

Thanks to all who replied smile You folks raised so many valid considerations. I'm not an impulsive buyer ( normally ) and like to research and
think about things. After reading all the replies it was clear. Fullfield II arrived today. Hoping that with splatter targets and 9x power
I can now see bullet impacts from the shooting bench at 100 yds.
Just the next step in my project to have accurate reduced recoil 308 loads . More to follow in the reloading forum.

For me, Burris all the way. Question: Does Burris still have the Fullfield with the tried and true Duplex reticle instead of Ballistic Plex?
