recommend US-89 north through UT.
also, take off highway 12 (UT) and see escalante, boulder and torrey.

Krp: As you drive north on I-15 in Montana at about mile post 47'ish into Montana will be a huge reservoir (Clark Canyon Reservoir) with several (6 if I recall correctly) "free" campgrounds spread out around the lake.
My oldest son and daughter were just here visiting for a week and we fished for a few hours at the Horse prairie Campground area of Clark Canyon Reservoir and my daughter caught a 22" 4 3/4" Rainbow Trout and my son caught a 20 1/2" 3 1/4 pound Rainbow Trout - from shore.
Remote country this but lots of beautiful mountains and side roads to explore.
Drive through Salt Lake City during the late evening hours - it can be a lengthy ongoing horror during the days.
Enjoy your excursion and watch for speeding, erratic driving, Canadians all along I-15 - Canadians are great people but MANY of them drive like asswholes.

Thanks for all the suggestions, I've looked at them all, can't do everything but I think I have a route kinds in place.
Starvation reservoir UT is a place I want to hit... walleye/bass. I'll be stopping at different waters but this is my focused one.
So up to Kanab, Fish lake, Price, then Starvation. I can go up a different way through Moab instead I guess.
Then Vernal, Flaming gorge, Bear Lake and into Montana to Clark canyon.
First leg, no time table, but probably a week in Utah/southern Idaho.

If your going to Starvation then you better plan an extra day for Strawberry reservoir. If nothing else just for the views, you won't be disappointed.

Thought of mentioning Strawberry. Was there twice caught some cutthroats and rainbows there. The first time friend and I just pulled off the road and camped near the water, when I was a bachelor in the late 70s. Next time took family and used the campground. Betting primitive camping is no longer allowed.

There is a very nice grass covered campground at the Dent Bridge on Dworshak Reservoir. There were several miles of dirt road getting there, it's been a few years since I was there. it was an excellent dirt road then. Stop in Lolo Sporting Goods in Lewiston,
They used to sell CCI made bullets by the pound, that ended years ago but it's still a cool old gunshop.

Kent, if you get that far up, be sure to check reports for the Priest and St Joe rivers too. A trip down HWY 12 along the Lochsa River then north to where the Clearwater River meets the Snake River at Lewiston is worth the drive, see Dowarshac Dam along the way. This is killing me hearing about smallmouths! I catch some at Roosevelt Lake and would love to get to Idaho and fish for them exclusively again. Kent you are going to have a blast! I never visited Dworshak Reservoir but after reading the link below, they say there are smallies AND Kokanee it would be on my list when I get up that way again. The main reason I'm targeting Starvation reservoir is smallmouth and then walleye.
