I have the chance to buy a 99K my question is is this finish too high gloss to be factory? I know the butt pad and peep aren’t original.

Coated with poly or varnish is my guess.

Is the asking price of 3200 too much if it has been varnished ?

Regarding "high gloss" appearance... As other side of coin! "Appearances and vicissitudes of photographs!" Personal experience!

I can unequivocally attest to the fact that quality of camera, lighting and other factors can materially 'effect' an amount of 'apparent' sheen such as on a gunstock. I have photos in my files from a couple of decades ago, which I know don't accurately depict the human vision. Such observation which differs materially from the photo files! It's frustrating and disgusting! But it is what it is and I'd not wish to embark on another such photoshoot project! (Whew!)
The rule emerged: "It Happens!" Adding... Live with it or redo the pix. If construing someone else's work... Inquire! 'If' seriously interested, I'd not let an opportunity get past without inquiry! Accuracy of appearance and "why?"

Just my 'situational take'!
Best!

The shop owner stated that the gun was from the factory with that finish. I was mostly curious what you guys who have seen a lot of 99’d might have to say about it.

Does it really matter? It is a damned fine looking gun. If it makes you happy, go for it.

Looks like the special order ‘Piano Finish’ that Winchester used on fancy/XXX wood. Did Savage offer a similar finish?

I would guess the wood got refinished in poly at the same time someone added the pad.

I also have a K with a butt pad. How much will the butt pad hurt the value?

I bought a K with a Noske side mount. The Noske was state of the art at the time. The seller let me have it for about half of what they were going for at the time. I would pass on that one. I don’t think those pads were ever state of the art. That wood is beautiful, and they cut it off.

If that shop owner saw it come out of the factory with that finish, he’s pushing 100 years old?

It is a pretty rifle.

I would pass as I want original condition. Wrong sight on the tang, refinished, stock cut for a pad and no discount price.

100% to a collector, cause he ain't buying it for any price.

50% of collector value to somebody that just wants to shoot it or hunt with it.
