Rather than do a posting search, has anyone tried this powder from your 300 WSMs over a chrony using either 150s and 155s?

Saw it on my dealer`s shelf yesterday. Out of curiosity thought I`d give it a try and bought a lb.

Hodgdon says,,,,,,,,3405 fps; 155 gr Hornady A-max from a 24" barrel with a charge of 73.5 gr; COAL @ 2.860"....

I tried this powder in my 300 wsm using the Barnes 165 gr xlc moly coated and the 165 gr ttsx. I got up to 3150 with the xlc bullets and 3120 with the ttsx, stiff bolt lift at these velocities, in my 300 wsm this powder is a joke, went back to Rl 17.

.............Possible you might have a slower bore or possible that the 30 cal 165 gr Barnes you used may have had a larger diameter by maybe 1/1000th or so vs the Hornady Amax Hodgdon used?

The reason I ask, is that on another thread IIRC entitled "RL17 and the 30-06",,someone posted a reply, where he was able to load 3 grains over Alliant`s maximum data using RL17 and a Nosler AB from his 30-06, and getting velocities in the mid 2700s from a 200 gr Nosler AB.

Mule Deer IIRC pointed out, that the Speer bullets used by Alliant for their RL17 30-06 testings were ever so slightly larger in diameter than the Nosler ABs by about a 1/1000ths or so. Hence the posters 3 grain capability over Alliant`s max data with no pressure signs and getting higher velocities as well.

To be fair to Hodgdon and trying to keep all things as equal as possible, I will use the same 155 gr Hornady A-Max as Hodgdon did.

Never could get a Superformance load in my WSM to shoot well enough that I cared how fast it was. I went back to Rl-19 with the 150's.

..........Every rifle is different, so I`ll find out what mine does with this powder.

If I can`t get any load to shoot well with the Superformance, then my toilet just might get an extra flush or two.

Three shots on the right are Superformance under a 150 ttsx at l00 yards from my 24" brux.

I tried the load again the other day and it only clocked 3420fps which is a bit slower than it clocked on this target. I've only shot two groups with it under 150 TTSX's so far but the worst of the 2 groups was under 1/2 moa too.

.................Thanks & not bad at all. I would be very pleased with such groupings.

Looks like you`ve had some very good luck with the Superformance while others haven`t been so lucky with their rifles. Very impressive 3420 fps speeds with great accuracy too. Looking for about 3240-75 from my compact. I`ll see what happens.

Certain powders work well in some rifles while others don`t. Holds true with every powder.

Impressive numbers but I believe your chronograph may be off, if those are true numbers I will bet you are way over the pressure limit.

I'm not sure about that. Hodgdon is quoting over 3,400 with the A-Max, and the TTSX at 150 grains ought to generate less pressure than the A-Max, I think. Seems about right to me.

.......Well maybe not. Hodgdon shows 3410 fps; 150 gr; using a 74 grain charge. Hodgdon is well noted for lawyering down their loads. Use to be anyway.

I see on his target that same 74 gr charge at what he reports is 3420 fps using the Barnes.

Not really all that much out of whack imo. Didn`t say if any pressure signs existed. If not, then his barrel about matches the characteristics of the Hodgdon test barrel.

I worked up to 3333 fps with 150 nosler ballistic tips and 73 grains Suprformance in a Kimber 8400, 24" barrel. I stopped there with no signs of pressure. Probably could have worked up some more but felt no reason to. Haven't shot for groups yet though.

Mines definately a warm load and my chrony has thrown a number or two before but I checked it on two different days. The #s were a ways apart but both over 3400. The chrony was reading other known loads right on. I'm going to back off a bit and see if it still shoots. I'm thinking on a hot day I may see some pressure at 74 g.

I plan on trying some 130's. I might be able to get those to 3600 from my 24" brux.

I might just have to try that bullet. I'd love to see how those bullets shoot.
