I think Delta flies into L.I. McArthur airport. Drive out east on the North Fork of L.I.
"Wine Country" now. But great beaches & cool stuff,very gorgeous.
Excellent fishing out of Orient Pt. in Sept.
Then take the Cross Sound Ferry out of Orient Pt. & hit Conn (New London),across the Thames River is Groton & you can check out a nuke submarine I think. More cool stuff,in Conn. too. Then R.I , Newport /Mansions. Then off to Boston & more Mass. stuff. After that then on North.
We love Boston ,I'd def. make that a stop. Another excellent suggestion. You could spend days on Long Island activities & it is much less crowded after Labor Day. Orient Point/ Montauk/ Shinnecock is some of the best salty fishing in the country. Hit the Port Jeff or Orient ferry right across the sound to shoot right over to Ct. -Ken

do all the coastal tourist traps on the u.s route 1 drive
don't be distracted by all the rainbow stickers on cars from massholechewshyts
maine sucks
only good thing they got is deer moose and bear hunting
and maybe fried clams with the bellys still on em
steamed ones are like a giant hot snot..................
im going up the second week in November to scatter a friends ashes at camp in t32md and take a swig outta a bottle of candian mist he saved for this event for his friends to chug when he kicked the bucket
and do some deer hunting and then I seriously doubt I will be visiting again for a long time
most of the state is on welfare or ssi
and drunk or stoned or a combo
but that coast sure is quaint
specially if your are a tourist and know you can leave
bwwhahahahahahahahaaaaaaa!!!!!!

Lots of good advice here. I've lived in NE my whole life, and would suggest hitting the coastal Maine communities (Camden, Freeport, Boothbay), Acadia Nat'l Park (Bar Harbor), the White Mountains, and some of the Maine or NH lakes regions (Rangeley, Laconia, Sebago).
New England is quite different North to South. Seems like all the folks from Mass & Connecticut vacation in Maine, NH and VT. I think there is a good reason for this. All good! I'll be up around Boothbay in a couple of weeks . Liked it so much, this is the 3rd year in a row. Planning on taking a spin up to Camden. Bath Me. has a cool maritime museum worth checking out. Kittery Trading Post is also worth the trip.
