DF, what's the finish on that rifle? Nicely done.
Thanks, it did turn out nice.
After good wood prep, I filled the pores with Custom Pro oil (tung oil/urethane) from Brownells, by wet sanding the Pro oil in circular motions with a small piece of 400 grit. I worked it into a slurry, let it stiffen up a bit, then wiped the excess cross grain, let it dry 24 hrs. and repeated.
I finished filling the pores with around 10-12 coats of Tru Oil because it dries faster. I steel wool between Tru Oil coats.
Then I recut the checkering.
Last two coats were with Pro Oil, wiped with a single ply of blue shop towel. The Pro Oil was worked out of the checkering with a tooth brush right before the wipe.
That last wipe is a secret, learned from a master.
Pro Oil is a harder finish than Tru Oil, just dries slow.
